Steampunk Granny does Tigers, Monkeys and Sharknado 2…Oh My!

                                                                       

I have been doing day trips all week with my granddaughter Kathryn who is visiting from Wyoming and my grandson Nathan who lives in New Jersey. Yesterday we headed out to the Philadelphia Zoo. The big cats and the primates were our favorite sights. We witnessed a Tiger trying to get to an orangutan that mischievously walked above the tiger’s resting spot near  the café where Nathan, Kathryn and I were eating lunch.

                                                                   

                                                                       

Nathan takes Parkour lessons and I've often wondered if the French invented the different movements for this sport by watching these guys.

                                                                  

                                                                                                                                                 

I introduced Nathan and Kathryn to Sharknado 2 “The second one”. Nathan thought Sharknado 2 was stupid until I explained to him that this was the whole point of the show. It was a tongue-in-cheek, MST3K sponge worthy (yes, I'm quoting Elaine from Seinfeld) type of film. It was meant to be downright stupid. Once Nathan understood, he sat back and enjoyed the movie.

                                                                             

How could you not like Sharknado or Sharknado 2? Where else can you find flying sharks and lots of people to snack on. The Syfy channel deserves a pat on the back for bringing us the sequel to Sharknado.

                                                                                       

Our Shark Ninja fighter, Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering), and his trusty sidekick, Skye (Vivica A. Fox), must help the frazzled and clueless citizens of New York survive the flying sharks, and they have to work quickly before two opposing tornadoes meet in the center of New York City.

                                                                                    

The show was made even funnier with Mat Lauer and Al Roker playing straight men to the oncoming shark attack weather alert as does Kelly Ripa on her show.

                                                                             

I can't wait until Sharknado 3 comes out and I can't wait until the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel does the next Mega Bad Movie Night featuring this film

 

Mega-Bad-Movie Night & The Academy of Natural Sciences

                                                                      

     

For all my geek and non-geek friends who are not familiar with the events hosted by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University on 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, listen up! Besides offering the general public great exhibits, live animals, live butterflies, dioramas, science and research, the Academy offers an event for adults, called Mega-Bad-Movie Night.
                                                                           

If you remember Mystery Theater 3000, then you know where I’m going with this. For the small price of 15 dollars, you get food, drinks (wine and beer at the cash bar), and a chance to check out the museum before the start of the movie.

                                                                         

Last night’s show was Dinocroc vs. Supergator, a Roger Corman film starring John Carradine as Jason Drake, Corey Landis as Paul Beaumont, Amy Rasimus as Cassidy Swanson, John Callahan as Charlie Swanson, and Rib Hillis as the “Cajun.”
                                                                           
 This show was your typical Roger Corman film (I love this man) with your typical scantily clad bimbos, muscle men, evil scientists, heroes, lots of guns and bombs, and anatomically incorrect dinosaurs. By the middle of the show, the audience was cheering whenever the Dinocroc or Supergator snacked on one of the actors.

                                                                       

This was a bad, bad movie, but that’s the whole point of the event. What makes this a fun filled night is the commentary that takes place throughout the film. No, we don’t have Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot or Gypsy,
                                                                                  

but Jason Poole, Dinosaur Hall Coordinator, and Paul Callomon, Collections Manager of Malacology, along with Mike Kaczmarcik, Teacher Naturalist and Outreach Manager did just as well if not better than MSt3K, at firing off comments to the audience, with one slight difference, with our commentators, we got some interesting scientific facts.  

                                                                         

This whole event is pull together by Jill Sybesma, Adults Program Manager. She and many of the Academy Staff entertain the guests before the movie begins by displaying some of the specimens from the Academy’s large research collection, and by showing off the animals from the Live Animal Unit. Last night we met an alligator and a snake.

                                                                           

The next Mega Bad Movie Night will be on June 27^th and will feature Paul Callomon and Teri Scott, Senior Marketing Manager. The movie and the third commentator will be announced. Take my word on this, we all deserve a fun night out and with Mega-Bad-Movie Night, you won’t be disappointed.
