REV Theatre Company's Cemetery Cabaret

This is my third year to watch the show at the Laurel Hill Cemetery located at 3822 Ridge Ave. Now everyone that reads my blogs knows that I'm often at the Laurel Hill Cemetery because they offer such awesome events like the graveside cabaret done by the REV Theatre Company which stars Rudy Caporaso, Denise Shubin and Felicia Anderton.

The musical is dark, witty and naughty and it is performed amidst the tombstones. My only complaint is that it ends too soon, at least for me. I wouldn't mind spending the entire night and into the early morning listening to the beautiful and haunting songs that this threesome belts out. Make sure to see this show before the Fringe Festival ends. The dates and information are below and I've included REV's website page too.

GETTING TO LAUREL HILL VIA SEPTA IS EASY!

Board SEPTA bus route 61, the Ridge Avenue line, in Center City at any stop on 9th Street between Walnut and Arch, and get off at Clearfield Street across from the Cemetery Gatehouse. You can also pick up the 61 bus on 11th & Market . Trip takes about 30 minutes.

Symphony For the Dead

                                                        

Last night my ghost hunting friends and I headed out to Laurel Hill Cemetery to listen to a concert in front of Millionaires Row. This is a special section located inside the cemetery that proves, once and for all that “You can take it with you”

                                                                     

The concert was given by an amazing group called The Divine Hand. What a treat!! I had heard this group play before at Dorian’s Steampunk Events in Philadelphia, but there is something just magical about hearing a concert while in a cemetery.

The group treated us to a special performance of funerary music, which was very popular during the 15^th century. The belief at the time was that a soul would be more comfortable moving on to the next life if it was accompanied by music; makes perfect sense to me. Musicians were hired by the family of the deceased to play music from sunset to sunset on the day of burial. This beautiful custom was later stopped by Pope Clement. I don’t know why. Maybe the musicians weren’t playing the Vatican’s favorite hits? The performers played in front of a particularly beautiful mausoleum. The audience was lifted to heights of surreal imagination via the music that soothed the souls of the living and dead who had attended that night.
