The Perils of a Self-Published-Tech-Challenged-Author

I’m a good writer. I love writing. I’ve been writing since I was ten, but where my stories are excellent, I suck at the mechanical part of writing. Hence, I rely on my wonderful editor, Patti O’Brien, to remove the extra comma or to make sure the story flows, and that the reader isn’t lost in a swirl of science fiction jibber jabber. Once the editing is done, I send my manuscript to Create Space, the publishing arm of Amazon. I always order the special package that gives me my own team who will format the book for me, assign the ISBN, then after my illustrator, Shelley Szajner, submits the final book cover, publish the book on Amazon and Kindle. All I have to do is promote and sell my books. What could go wrong with such a great system? Find out after the jump.

Format Hall of Horrors

I’m not that great with math. I blame it all on fractions. I was an honor student for all twelve years in Catholic School, but even though I was good at addition, subtraction, multiplication and long division, when it came to fractions, my mind came to a full halt. I think my lack of direction when driving is connected to the same chromosome that controls my stupidity about fractions. The nuns at school could not figure out how I was able to excel in all subjects except math, and after several noted episodes, they’d learned to never send me on an errand that involved me finding my way to the school office. Really, I am that bad at directions and often wonder how I ever found my way through the birth canal.

When I began using Create Space, I was overjoyed with the fact that my assigned Create Space team would handle everything. I had writer friends who also used Create Space. Some were successful in formatting their own manuscript without paying for the extra service, but some were not, and it showed in the finished product. I wanted my book to be professional and the price of having your own team was worth every penny. I had already published four books through Create Space. My Roof Oasis Sci-Fi Series was very popular because the books looked just as good as the ones published through traditional publishers.

 Fred and Lucy

I am a psychic/medium who has been seeing the dead since I was a toddler. This gift runs in the family. My mother and father were also able to see the dead. I grew up in South Philly, and worked in my parents’ grocery store. My parents weren’t the easiest to love, and my siblings and I weren’t the easiest to raise. I had begun to post weekly blogs about growing up in the grocery store and the hilarious antics of my father and mother. People loved my weekly blogs called “Life with Fred and Lucy” and soon they were asking when there would be a book. My parents who were both dead, had taken residence in my attic. They were also anxious for this book to be written. So you can imagine my shock when I learned that Create Space was no longer offering the complete author service, especially since this book would have twenty or more black and white photos included within the different chapters. What the hell was I to do?

Conclusion

I kind of lost it when customer service explained that this paid and complete service was no longer available. NO! No! No!  I even explained to the manager that Fred and Lucy would not be happy and would haunt anyone who prevented this book from being published. I may have scared the shit out of the poor guy, but luckily, he stayed on line as I submitted my manuscript. I am not sure if the site will automatically format this book as well as “The Team” did.

I’ve tweeted Amazon about my unhappiness with their new rules, but so far, no answer. “Life with Fred and Lucy” is a humorous memoir of growing up in South Philly during the ’50s and ’60s, but it is also a true ghost story. I will keep you all updated on how the book is going.

Luckily, I have a good friend in my writers’ group who is taking on this project. Shelley will be professionally formatting the entire book, photos and all. So if there are any self-published authors out there who are clueless about formatting your book onto Create Space, or need a kick-ass book cover...Shelley is the person to contact. I know that Lucy and Fred are happy that this book is in good hands.

Updates on Book, BOO's, Boo boo's and Boot Camp

Well, my novella, Roof Oasis, is in the hands of Amazon Create Space and I have my own team. I get to do the second meeting with them on Monday. Oooh la di da!  I had my futuristic zombie story professionally edited and I well have a pro do the cover. Patti O’Brien and Shelley Szajner are both part of the South Jersey Writers’ Group and they rock!

Our group published a short story anthology, Tall Tales and Short Stories from South Jersey, last year and we did so well with it; promoting and selling, that there will be two more books coming out in the not so far future. I’ll keep you posted on SJWG’s progress.

                                                                    one of the proofs
I also had the professional photographer and owner of Bombshell Pinups do my author pictures. I should be getting the final prints, soon. I will post them on my blog and see which of the four poses is the most popular.  You can contact Bombshell Pinups at www.bombshellpinups.net   She does marvelous work.

A fellow ghost hunter and I recently investigated a private home where the owner was afraid that the spirits there were harmful, but after we did a full investigation, we came to the conclusion that the spirits haunting the home were quite nice if not a bit confused. Suggestions were made and we are waiting to hear from the owner. Since this is still and open case, no other details can be given out.

Husband is still in the process of healing from the snow blowing incident and finding out what is wrong with his knee. MRI will be done next week. Hope there is no surgery required. Now if we could just get that blood pressure down.

In a few weeks, my grandson Jimmy, who is at Parris Island doing Marine Boot Camp, will be graduating. I miss that kid and can’t wait to see him. We’re driving out to South Carolina to pick him up. I’ll be one of the drivers. I hope I don’t get us lost. I have a reputation of always taking the wrong turn.

The Amazing Jack Flacco, Author of Ranger Martin and The Zombie Apocalypse

I'm so excited about this interview. Jack Flacco is a very talented writer, who like me, loves zombies. His blog features three popular subjects, but my favorite is Women Who Wow. Jack has recently published his book and it's already making news. Join me now as I introduce Jack Flacco, the brains behind Ranger Martin and The Zombie Apocalypse

Marie Gilbert: Hi Jack. It's such a pleasure to have you as my guest. Let's start off the interview with you telling us a little bit about yourself.

Jack Flacco: I feel awkward whenever someone asks me this question since it requires some bragging. How about if I just say I write about stuff and some of the stuff makes sense. How does that sound?

Marie Gilbert: I understand completely, Jack and I'll do the bragging for you. Jack is an amazing writer who lives in Ontario, Canada. He and his wife not only contribute to many charitable organizations, but they strongly believe in the importance of Universal Literacy. I could do more bragging about Jack, but I better get back to the interview. Jack, who or what was your inspiration for this book.

Jack Flacco: I woke up one morning with a name on my mind—Ranger Martin. Whoever he was, his name stuck with me. As I shaved that morning, images swirled in my head of Ranger’s exploits fighting legions of zombies. It became evident he would be the star in a book that I had yet to write.

Marie Gilbert: Tell us about Ranger Martin and The Zombie Apocalypse and what makes this book different than the other zombie books on the shelves?

Jack Flacco: My current reading material nowadays consists of legal thrillers by John Grisham. I’m attempting to consume his entire bibliography in chronological order based on publication date. I’m halfway there. Missing from my bookshelf is a large swath of zombie literature to which I can compare my book. If you find something you like in the series, let me know, I’m interested in what the audience thinks. As an alternative, you can also read the reviews on my site and on Amazon. Zombie fans would know more of what makes Ranger Martin and The Zombie Apocalypse different than from what I can ever say about the series.

Marie Gilbert: Side note to my readers: If you want an insight into Jack's thinking on zombies, check out his Mayhem Mondays on his blog. Back to you, JackIs the book available on Nook and Kindle?

Jack Flacco: It is available from Amazon as an eBook and as a paperback.

Marie Gilbert: Will there be a sequel to Ranger Martin and The Zombie Apocalypse?

Jack Flacco: Yes.

Marie Gilbert: Well, I for one, will be anxiously awaiting the sequel. What publishing house did you use or is this self-published? If self-published (I’m a fan of self-published if done professionally). Tells us the cons and pros of getting the book to the finish line?

Jack Flacco: For the eBook, I used Amazon’s Kindle Desktop Publishing site to submit my manuscript. Once accepted, they take care of distribution. For the paperback version, I used CreateSpace. The rules are pretty much the same for both platforms and Amazon looks after the backend. It makes for a seamless process. As for finishing the book, I had hard deadlines to hit for every step of the way (writing, editing, proofing, etc.). Concept art took months to finalize. In the end, it all came together without a hitch. I’m thrilled to know my fans have embraced the book to make it their own.

Marie Gilbert: What suggestions would you give to other aspiring writers to help them in their journey to being published. What have you learned from your trials and tribulations?

Jack Flacco: Life has many distractions, remain focused. Everyone has chores, car maintenance, school, work, and medical appointments to keep. Make a commitment and follow through. Give yourself deadlines and stick to them. Stay away from the dark side of the business. You’ll recognize it by hearing others say phrases such as, “I’ve lost my inspiration”, “I feel so down”, “I’m insecure with what I’m creating”, “I’m struggling here”, “All I get is rejection”, “I can’t get an agent/publishing deal”, “I don’t feel like doing anything today.” Put on the blinders and keep pushing forward. Forget about the excuses. Your success is your own.

Marie Gilbert: Jack, In your opinion how has social media helped writers.

Jack Flacco: Social media provides writers with the opportunity to connect with their fans one-on-one. That’s the canned response. My answer? Social Media’s a great way to have fun with the audience in order for them to feel as if they’re involved in the creative process. I feel privileged to have a supportive group of folks who forgives my posting silly photos on facebook of trees, food, and other weird and wonderful things. They certainly know how to brighten my day.

Marie Gilbert: I Love your blog and know the readers would like to learn more about it.

Jack Flacco: Sure, you can find me at www.JackFlacco.com. I post three times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. My Monday Mayhem series deals with all things zombie. Women Who Wow Wednesday features strong female leads in motion pictures and TV. And I write whatever comes to mind during Freedom Friday.

Marie Gilbert: Jack, my last question, where can we find your book?

Jack Flacco: You can find it available worldwide exclusively at Amazon.

Jack, I want to thank you for being a guest on my blog, and for all my zombie snacks out there, buy the book and tell me what you think. Make sure to check out Jack Flacco's Blog; you won't be sorry:)
