Part Thirty of Lilith's Escape

“I’m sorry,” Edward said, seeing how upset Lilith was with his attempt at humor, “but this is my way of coping with all of this paranormal stuff.”

“I don’t set out to capture and crush hearts, Edward. I and the others like me were made to be desirable to improve the gene pool for the planet we are assigned to.”

Well, she was desirable that’s for sure, but something Lilith had said puzzled Edward. “What others?” he asked.

“There is more than one Universe and each universe is filled with planets and life forms that have either reached your point of evolution or have surpassed it. When a life form has reached the point of self-recognition, an immortal is sent to improve the survival of the species.”

“Whatever happened to Eve? Wasn’t she an immortal? Did she die?” Edward was curious about the whereabouts of the mother of all mankind. Eve was after all, the genetic cocktail that set the human race on its evolutionary fast track.

“She is alive, but this is all I will tell you.”

“Who’s behind the capture of Lazarus and the zombie that attacked me?” Edward asked.

“The Illuminati are the ones behind this treachery,

along with a few renegade immortals .

These are dangerous times for your world.”

“How do we fight them?” Edward asked, unsure if he really wanted to know.

“With our very lives, but not tonight. Tonight you are mine, dear one.” Lilith put out her hand for Edward to take.

As Edward took her hand and followed her back to the castle, he gave a cautious glance up towards the sky and wondered what his chances of survival would be if he took Lilith as his, tonight.

Part Twenty-six of Lilith's Escape

“Why?” Edward asked after the waitress walked away.

“He is a very bad man,” she replied, her fingers tapping at the corner of the menu. “What do you want to eat?

“I seem to have lost my appetite,” Edward said and placed his menu on the table.

She let out a sigh. “He hurts little boys, kills them. Don’t waste any pity on this man. His death will nourish me and protect the innocent.”

Edward didn’t answer, but not because of what she had just revealed. How could he judge her when he also killed to protect the innocent?

She slid over in the booth, sitting as close as possible. “Ask me your questions,” she said and placed her hand on his.

“Why did you kill Lazarus? Wasn’t he a good man?”

“I was tricked into believing that Lazarus would interfere with events that were meant to happen. He was my friend and I was fooled into poisoning him.

There was no way I could correct this horrible error, but luckily this problem was solved by the only one who could.”

“You weren’t punished for your mistake? We’re talking about religious events that changed the world forever.”

“Heaven and Hell have their own game plan and it's not about religion,” she replied.

“What will happen to Lazarus when we find him?”

“I bring him peace.”

“You mean to kill him then?”

“First we must save him from the people who hold him captive.” She leaned in and kissed him on his cheek, adding, “Dearest Edward, there are many ways to bring peace to a man.”

Edward wanted to take off her sunglasses, look into her eyes and see if she was telling him the truth. “And what about me, what happens after we save Lazarus?”

“You must choose.”

“I want to be with you, but you scare me more than death itself.” Edward stood up and walked towards the door. He had to get away, think things through, without the temptation of her body so close to him.

Once outside and in the cool night air of the little town, he began to walk, not knowing where he was going. He had only walked a short way, when the man caught up to him.

Edward found himself staring into the muzzle of a German luger.

Part Twenty-four of Lilith's Escape

Edward tried to pull Lilith into the tub with him, even though she was clothed, but as he did, a shooting pain ripped through his shoulder, stopping his amorous tug of war.

“Damn it,” he said and released Lilith. Rubbing his shoulder, he apologized, “I guess my fighting with that creature last night aggravated my injury.”

“I need you healed. We have a lot of work ahead of us.” She was kneeling next to the tub and let her fingers trail from his cheek, very slowly down his chest.

“Climb in with me,” Edward coaxed, but she brushed his hand away. He watched as Lilith took out a small dagger from inside her cloak. “What are you doing?” He asked as she pressed the blade to her finger.

“Drink,” she said and placed her bleeding fingertip to his lips. “This will heal you.”

He should have refused her request, pushed her away and ran for the hills, but instead, he took her finger into his mouth and sucked. It didn’t take long for the blood to have an effect on him. Her blood burned as it slid down his throat, but within seconds, his pain was gone. He felt renewed, strong and…?

“The full effect hasn’t hit you,” she warned him.

“I feel great right now,” he replied and tried once more to pull her into his arms, but then the room began to spin. He felt woozy and grabbed the tub for support, “Lilith?”

“My blood is much too strong for a mortal, but you’ll feel better in a little while.”

“What did you do to me?” He tried to lift himself from the tub…

…When he opened his eyes again, he was no longer in the tub. Edward found himself fully dressed and lying on the bed. Lilith was on the other side, reading a book. When she saw that he was awake, she crawled over and snuggled next to him.

“What happened?” he asked, too shaken to do more than lay there.

“Your wounds are healed. Come on, get out of bed. We have places to go.”

“How the hell did you get me out of the tub?” Edward asked. He had questions, lots of questions, and it was up to the woman in his arms to supply him with the answers.

“It's better that you don't know.”

“How?” Edward demanded an answer, but it never came.

She slid away from his side. “I’m hungry and need to build up my strength.”

“What year are we in?” Edward wondered if she had transported him into a new time period.

“Same year, I can’t take you through time without the car. Your mortal body would be torn apart. I can, however, take you to different places,” she replied.

“Why is everyone looking for this Levi guy?” Edward stood up and began to look for his shoes.

“Because of who and what he is,” she replied. She walked over to his side of the bed and stood in front of him.

“And that is?”

“He is Lazarus.”
